The FCAA Jim Dwyer Journalism Scholars Award

This $5,000 award, intended as a stipend for a student who undertakes (and completes) an unpaid summer 2021 internship in the field of journalism, will be presented to two Fordham College juniors or seniors who demonstrate outstanding interest and promise in becoming a journalist. The recipients will have a knowledge of journalism, experience reporting and writing, and an interest in pursuing a career in the field. He or she will also have secured an unpaid internship for summer 2021. Applications will be judged on presentation, content, writing skill and experience to date. This award will be awarded by June 1, 2021.

Applicants must be juniors or seniors at Fordham College Rose Hill. Applications must be emailed by June 1, 2024 to [email protected].

The application consists of: 

1. A cover note to the award committee detailing your credentials for this award and a description of the internship you have secured for summer 2024.  Include your inspiration to study journalism, your experience doing so to date and your aspirations for the future. Also include contact information (name, address, phone, email, date of birth) and the internship workplace name, name of supervisor and time commitment required. 
    
2. A resume containing education and work experience, most notably any previous internships or paid positions related to journalism.
    
3. A sample of (up to three) stories written by you and published by a college or professional media outlet. PDFs or links accepted. For large video or audio files, save to google drive and share with [email protected].

Responsibilities 

During your internship, you will be required to submit a mid-term and final report, signed by your supervisor, confirming that you have met the requirements of the position.  

Details

The first half of the award ($2500) will be remitted upon announcement of the award. The second half ($2500) will be presented upon FCAA receipt of the mid-term report.

The Arden Scholarships offer $15,000 in total scholarship funds to be awarded to one or more students. This award recognizes students of strong ethical character who have demonstrated a commitment to journalistic integrity, factuality, diversity and inclusion, and fairness and/or to public communication through other media fields. 

The scholarship is open to rising juniors and seniors majoring in Communication and Media Studies on both campuses.  Applicants must have demonstrated financial need equal to or greater than the award amount. A valid FAFSA must be on file with Student Financial Services by April 12th, 2024.

Funded by a generous bequest of Thomas Kavanagh, a graduate of the University’s undergraduate School of Education, this scholarship is intended to help an exceptional CMS student cover the cost of tuition during his/her senior year. It provides up to $20,000.00. Applicants must be Rose Hill Communication and Media Studies majors in their junior year of study with unmet financial need.

Applicants must be Communication and Media Studies majors in their junior year of study and are required to submit an essay and upload an oral presentation of their work.

Apply for the Thomas Kavanaugh Scholarship - Deadline is Friday, March 1st, 2024, 5:00 PM

This scholarship honors the memory of one of Fordham's legendary professors. Professor Edward A. Walsh was an outstanding teacher and mentor in the Communication and Media Studies department for more than 25 years and a long-time advisor to The Ram. He was also an ambassador who strived to connect the university to the wider community, consistently inviting a range of guests to speak with students at Fordham and traveling abroad to engage editors and international students alike. The award, which was created by a group of Professor Walsh's former students, is intended to help exceptional CMS students cover the cost of tuition during their senior year. $50,000 in total scholarship funds to be awarded to one or more students toward unmet financial need.

Applicants must be Communication and Media Studies majors at Rose Hill or Lincoln Center in their junior year of study, have at least a 3.0 GPA, and have unmet financial need. A valid FAFSA must be on file with Student Financial Services by April 12th, 2024.

Applicants are required to submit work samples and an essay.

The Herbert A. Robinson Award is for students pursuing any type of creative media production, including but not limited to an original film script, television script, feature article, short film, multimedia or digital storytelling piece, website, data visualization, interactive media, advertisement or promotional campaign, short story, play, poem. 

Amount: $500.00

Applicants are required to submit a sharable file containing their entry(only one entry per applicant). The winning entry will be selected by three judges from the Department of Communication and Media Studies. Applications may be submitted from both Rose Hill and Lincoln Center majors.

Apply for the Herbert A. Robinson Award in Creative Production - Deadline: Friday, April 26th, 2024, 5:00 PM

Two annual awards of $1000 each are given in honor of William (Bill) DiPietra, a CMS graduate in the class of 1998.  After leaving Fordham, he established his own film production company, Richmond Productions, where he produced, directed, and filmed several 16mm short films and won two film festival awards all the while working as an Emergency Medical Technician for the New York Fire Department.

One award recognizes achievement in screenwriting that serves the public interest; the other recognizes achievement in either filmmaking or film/video criticism that serves the public interest.  Entries for criticism may be in any format, including writing, audio, or video itself. 

Applicants should supply a synopsis or summary of 150-250 words describing the public interest dimension(s) of their entry. The award is open to a junior or senior CMS student from either campus. Applicants are required to submit a sharable file containing their entry (only one entry per applicant).
