Title of Research: Wakandan Green Spaces in NYC and Singapore: Exploring Urban and Environmental Integration Efforts Through Virtual Reality and Immersive Journalism

Mentor: Lori Greene, Communications

Abstract: Since Black Panther’s release in 2018, urban and environmental scientists have identified the fictional country of Wakanda as an exemplary model of a green, urban utopia. Wakanda demonstrates how an urban ecological society can exist, refuting the idea that human advancements equate environmental degradation. This project explores green urban spaces in NYC and Singapore that reflect Wakandan elements. The goal is to demonstrate that nature and urban life can and should coexist, and further developing sustainable technologies can help create urban societies that are mutually beneficial with the environment.

NYC and Singapore provide unique examples of the intersection of urban infrastructure and green development. Singapore is known for its “city in a garden” model, where the environment is not viewed as a separate entity to urban areas, but rather as something that urban societies weave into, like Wakanda. While NYC is not as refined, highlighting initiatives throughout the city assists in understanding the process of green integration.

This virtual reality docuseries discusses the development of green urban spaces in NYC and Singapore, their impact on the environment and surrounding communities, and how they reflect the present and future fusion of urban infrastructure and green development, especially with the integration of technological advancements. Through virtual reality, viewers can immerse themselves into these spaces firsthand through walkthrough experiences, helping them realize that futuristic sustainable urban planning is achievable, and not just a sci-fi concept. This project also highlights how virtual reality can create possibilities for more immersive storytelling experiences in journalism.
