For Parents and Families
Studying abroad was a learning experience that could not be duplicated! Living with a family immersed in the culture, taking classes in Spanish, and traveling to many different countries was beyond what we expected! Studying abroad is more than learning in a classroom, it is a cultural immersion & a unique opportunity every Fordham student should take advantage of. - J. McCartin parent of Granada alumnus

Top Five Benefits of Studying Abroad
1. Increases Employability
Living or studying internationally has proven to lead to better job prospects and higher salaries. Students who study abroad gain a competitive edge in the global marketplace and boost their resume for any job field. Only about 10% of US students nationwide study abroad. Therefore, this experience truly sets students apart, especially if your student participates in opportunities to intern or volunteer abroad. The Office for International and Study Abroad Programs works closely with Fordham's Career Services to support students in including these experiences on their resumes and in interviews.
2. Improves Grade Point Average
Studies have shown that students who study abroad improve their GPAs at a higher rate than similar students who stay on-campus, even with external variables controlled. Some believe study abroad students find their academic niche while abroad and feel more invigorated academically upon their return.
3. Improves Grade Point Average
There is a proven correlation between study abroad participation and graduation and retention. With proper planning, study abroad helps progress students towards degree completion and does not require any additional time to graduate, and noted above can deepen and expand students' areas of academic interest.
4. Builds Career Skills
Similar to improved employability, study abroad also helps students develop skills necessary for career success. This includes but is not limited to communication, confidence, adaptability, intercultural competencies, foreign language, problem solving, and self-awareness. These are great skills that will not only help students get hired, but also help with longer term career growth.
5. Sparks Personal Growth
Studying abroad is a unique and transformative experience. Students have their eyes opened to new perspectives and often obtain a new outlook on the world around them and their place in it. They develop a global mindset that helps them tackle new challenges and increase their sense of personal responsibility.
The Challenge of Study Abroad
Certain aspects of the study abroad process can seem challenging or overwhelming for students and their supporters, starting with selecting a program and submitting an application.
The entire experience is an important learning process designed to help students exercise the independent problem-solving skills that they will need to succeed abroad and beyond
There will be times where students feel challenged during pre-departure, uncomfortable or homesick while abroad, or isolated and confused upon returning. This is normal and our office and you, as a parent or supporter, are here to help the students in a way that still allows them to tackle the situation independently and experience personal growth and develop new skills.
How You Can Support Your Student
Beginning Preparations:
Be available to discuss study abroad with your student - ask them about their goals and what they'd like to get out of their experience. Encourage them to be in touch with our office, academic advisors, and other mentors in their lives to seek additional information and advice. Where possible, encourage them to do their own research and take ownership for their application process. Support them in obtaining or renewing a passport where necessary.
Prior to Departure:
Discuss with them program next-steps, help them get and stay organised as they work to submit required commitment materials for their program. Continue to discuss their goals for the program and how you or other supporters in their life might offer support. Develop a plan to stay in touch. Discuss financial matters and encourage them to set practice budgets.
While Abroad:
Allow your student to share their experience with you, including both highlights and struggles. Provide reassurance and support as necessary. Remind your student of the “study” in study abroad and make sure they remember the educational aspect of the experience and aren’t trying to turn the experience into a vacation.

Fordham's 100+ approved full termstudy abroad programs operate using a "home school tuition" model, meaning need and merit based scholarships from the university will continue to apply. Program costs can vary some, largely based on applicable fees, housing, and the overall cost of living. Tuition payments will be made to Fordham through the e-bill suite on the same schedule as other terms.
Short-term and summer programs are charged on a different, program specific tuition drivenmodel. More specifics about both are available on our costs and funding page.
The Office of Study Abroad can support answering questions about program fees. Student Financial Services remains a good point of contact for questions about financial packages, payment plans, and billing timelines.

Housing opportunities vary by study abroad program. The most common housing types include student residence halls, apartments, and/or homestays. Housing options applicable for your student's program will be reviewed with them in advance of their semester abroad and they will likely have the opportunity to complete residential questionnaires to select housing assignments, roommates, etc.
Housing for a study abroad program does not interrupt housing guarantees provided in your student's financial packages. Continued enrollment or disenrollment in Fordham on-campus housing should be discussed directly with Residential Life Lincoln Center or Rose Hill.
