German Studies

As a German studies major, your coursework will focus on cultural, social, and historical contexts. You’ll take most of your courses in German to enhance your fluency and understanding of the culture and linguistics.

As a German language and literature major, all of your required major courses will be conducted in German. Your coursework will focus on examining German culture through literary works ranging from medieval to postmodern times.

Beyond the fundamentals of German language and culture, you might dive into specific areas with courses like Business German, where you’ll learn German for business correspondences, preparing you for roles at places like German-based banks, retail brands, and tech companies. You could also take Comedy and Cultural Critique in Germany, where you’ll examine different perceptions of German humor—or humorlessness.

You’ll be prepared for a wide range of career paths in areas such as international relations, business, foreign policy, teaching, publishing, and social work. You’ll also be uniquely qualified to pursue advanced study or attend law school.

At Fordham, you’ll use AI as a tool to enhance your learning. Our program will equip you with the skills to navigate the ever-changing landscape of AI in the workforce. As a German major, you might use AI for basic transcription or examine German data sets used to train AI models, preparing you for high-growth roles in areas like linguistic data analysis. 

You’ll also be able to earn credentials and paid micro-internships through IBM SkillsBuild’s Getting Started with AI course. All Fordham students and graduates have access to AI training through RamConnect, the University’s alumni and experiential learning platform.
