Javier Morgado, GABELLI ‘06

Javi Morgado is a regional vice president of content at TEGNA, where he oversees the company’s television stations in the Northeast & Southeast and leads morning news strategy across its 64 stations. He is an award-winning television executive with more than 25 years of experience in network, cable, and local TV news. Morgado previously spent more than a decade at CNN, where he led the cable network’s morning show, “New Day,” for nearly seven years. During his tenure, the four-time Emmy award-winning executive producer earned two National News Emmy Awards for CNN’s breaking coverage of George Floyd’s murder and the FBI's Roger Stone raid, and he received an Edward R. Murrow Award for continuing coverage of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. 

Prior to joining CNN, Morgado was the VP of business development & communications for Latina magazine. He was responsible for strategic development of the magazine’s print and online properties, crafting the brand’s public relations strategy and managing all of its content partnerships & brand extensions.

Prior to joining Latina, Morgado held several management positions at NBC News during his 11-year tenure. Most recently, he served as supervising producer of NBC's “TODAY” show from 2006-2010, during which time the show was honored with two Daytime Emmy Awards for outstanding morning program. From 2003–2006, Morgado was a senior editor at the NBC News Network Desk, where he was responsible for managing daily news coverage for the network’s news division.

Before coming to the network in 2001, Morgado was the assignment manager at NBC station WTVJ in Miami, Florida. The Miami native began his journalism career at WPLG.

Morgado holds a Master of Business Administration in Media Management from Fordham University’s Gabelli School of Business and a Master of Science in human resource management from New York University. He completed a Bachelor of Science in Communication at the University of Miami.

Morgado was inducted into the Silver Circle honor society by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for 25+ years of distinguished service and significant contributions to the TV news industry. He also was honored with a proclamation by the New York City Council for his “outstanding contributions to journalism, the arts and the LGBTQ+ community.”
