THE NYC RBERN AND NYC LANGUAGE RBERN
2023 Teachers Institute: Techniques and Tools to Design Lesson Interactions That Engage and Affirm Multilingual Learners
Speaker: Dr. Kate Kinsella
The New York City RBERN, in collaboration with the New York State Language RBERN, is pleased to host a one-day institute featuring Dr. Kate Kinsella. Dr. Kinsella is an emeritus teacher educator from San Francisco State University where she addressed English as a Second Language research and instruction. Her 30-year career focus has been dedicated to equipping students from diverse economic and linguistic backgrounds with the advanced language and literacy skills needed to be truly high school and college ready.
A primary goal of US college and career readiness initiatives is to ensure K-12 scholars develop the verbal skills to communicate effectively in diverse academic and professional settings. Integrating routine classroom interactions that significantly improve students’ language and literacy skills is both a science and an art. Simply providing standards-aligned questions and opportunities to collaborate with peers will not yield impressive linguistic results.
Every student is an AEL: Academic English Learner. No youth speaks academic English as a home language.
Multilingual learners, like their English only peers, benefit from opportunities to explore lesson content with a partner using academic language and participate actively in related class discussions. Drawing from compelling research in both secondary and elementary classrooms and extensive classroom practice, Dr. Kinsella will focus on a core set of proven practices and instructional routines to support Multilingual Learners in flexing their academic language muscles, interacting productively with peers, listening attentively, responding in writing, and advancing their lesson understandings.
